The Yoga of Synthesis Diary Leaves 3

 Album The Goal - Yoga of Synthesis

Dated 3 December 2024

Some more words of wisdom on the yoga of synthesis.

When Helena Petrovna Blavatsky proclaimed, ʺAll the old worships indicate the existence of a single Theosophy anterior to them. The key that is to open one must open  all, she pointed her finger to "Theo (relating to God) - Sophia (Wisdom) - The Wisdom Religion Esoteric in All Ages," indicating a synthesis of exoteric religions.

That is precisely what Sri Aurobindo (from the lineage of yogi Swami Vivekananda) said on the synthesis of yogas: "The synthesis we propose cannot, then, be arrived at either by combination in mass or by successive practice. It must therefore be effected by neglecting the forms and outsides of the Yogic disciplines and seizing rather on some central principle common to all, which will include and utilise in the right place and proportion their particular principles, and on some central dynamic force, which is the common secret of their divergent methods and capable, therefore, of organising a natural selection and combination of their varied energies and different utilities. This was the aim which we set before ourselves at first when we entered upon our comparative examination of the methods of Nature and the methods of Yoga and we now return to it with the possibility of hazarding some definite solution."

He adored the Divine Mother in the Book of the Divine Mother as the bestow-er of the "Wisdom of Synthesis" to King Aswapati (who was a high initiate and a yogi of synthesis):

...

Illumined by her all-seeing identity

Knowledge and Ignorance could strive no more;

No longer could the titan Opposites,

Antagonist poles of the world’s artifice,

Impose the illusion of their twofold screen

Throwing their figures between us and her.

The Wisdom was near, disguised by its own works,

Of which the darkened universe is the robe.

No more existence seemed an aimless fall,

Extinction was no more the sole release.

The hidden Word was found, the long-sought clue,

Revealed was the meaning of our spirit’s birth,

Condemned to an imperfect body and mind,

In the inconscience of material things

And the indignity of mortal life.

...

And when the Divine Mother sends down her own emanation, Savitri, as world-redeemer (her mission being the salvation of Satyavan), Sri Aurobindo says:

“Hard is the world-redeemer’s heavy task;

The world itself becomes his adversary,

Those he would save are his antagonists:

This world is in love with its own ignorance,

Its darkness turns away from the saviour light,

It gives the cross in payment for the crown.

His work is a trickle of splendour in a long night;

He sees the long march of Time, the little won;

A few are saved, the rest strive on and fail:

A Sun has passed, on earth Night’s shadow falls.

Yes, there are happy ways near to God’s sun;

But few are they who tread the sunlit path;

Only the pure in soul can walk in light.

...

...

He must enter the eternity of Night

And know God’s darkness as he knows his Sun.

For this he must go down into the pit,

For this he must invade the dolorous Vasts.

Imperishable and wise and infinite,

He still must travel Hell the world to save.

Into the eternal Light he shall emerge

On borders of the meeting of all worlds;

There on the verge of Nature’s summit steps

The secret Law of each thing is fulfilled,

All contraries heal their long dissidence.

There meet and clasp the eternal opposites,

There pain becomes a violent fiery joy;

Evil turns back to its original good,

And sorrow lies upon the breasts of Bliss:

She has learned to weep glad tears of happiness;

Her gaze is charged with a wistful ecstasy.

Canto Two: The Way of Fate and the Problem of Pain, Book Six: The Book of Fate.

Nicholas Roerich and Helena Roerich (through leaves of Master Morya's garden) gave us Agni Yoga (on the first ray) to strengthen our fiery will to synthesise and bring it into our daily lives by living ethics.

Vicente Beltran Anglada gave us Agni Yoga from the perspective of the synthesis petals of the heart chakra (on the second ray).

So do all other modern yogis, such as Paramhansa Yogananda (from the lineage of Mahavatar Babaji), proclaim the same synthesis through their teachings and have tried establishing churches of all religions.

And finally let us remind ourselves the wise words of the Master Djwal Khul and Alice Bailey:

"We are entering a vast experimental period of discovery; we shall discover just exactly what we are - as nations, in our group relationships, through our expression of religion and in our mode of governments. It will be an intensely difficult era and will be only successfully lived through if each nation will recognize its own internal defects and will handle them with vision and deliberate humanitarian purpose. This means for each nation the overcoming of pride and the attainment of interior unity. Each country today is divided within itself by warring groups - idealists and realists, political parties and far-sighted statesmanship, religious groups, fanatically occupied with their own ideas, capital and labour, isolationists and internationalists, people violently against certain groups or nations and others working on behalf of them. The only factor which can eventually and in due time bring harmony and the end of these chaotic conditions is right human relations."

In order to establish right human relations, they have guided us into the "Yoga of Synthesis" throughout their twenty-four books of esoteric philosophy on the seven rays.

So far that which I have understood (and that which is the purpose of my facebook page) as being the Yoga of Synthesis I shall attempt to illustrate visually and summarise in my own words - "A wrestle of eternal aliens or opposites ceases when they unite at the apex of triangle of synthesis."

To give quick example on the ray one we have political parties in almost all democracies today in conflict with one another.

In-fact most of the current leaders fit into either of the following types in DKs words -

1. Rule by the leader of some democratic country, who is usually called a president, or by some statesman (no matter by what name he may choose to be called) who is frequently an idealist, though limited by his faulty human nature, by the period in which he lives, by his advisors, and by the widespread corruption and selfishness. A study of such men who have held office in this capacity, made by a fair-minded neutral, will usually demonstrate the fact that they held office under the influence of some idea, which was in itself intrinsically right (no matter how applied), which was forward-moving in its concept, and belonged to the then new age. This relates them to the second ray.

2. Rule by dictators, whose animating principle is not one of the new age ideals, emerging in their particular time, but an idealism of a more material kind—a generally recognised present idealism. They are not usually reactionary nor are they found among the intuitive workers of their age, but they take what is grounded, settled and easily available—made so by the thinkers of their time—and then give it a material, national and selfish twist and objective, and so force it on the masses by fear, warlike means and material promises. They belong, therefore, more practically to the third ray methods of work, for they are intelligent, expedient, and materially constructive. True idealism, involving as it must the new age patterns, and religious incentives are lacking in their techniques. Nevertheless, they do lead the race on another step, for they have a mass effect in evoking thought, and sometimes eventual resistance, as the result of that thought.

Sadly we see aspirants, probationers, and disciples being in opposing camps, unable to overcome the glamours of their rays and gauge intuitive statesmen through contemplation on the work of Ray One master -

"The Master Morya acts as the inspirer of the great national executives throughout the world. Even those whose ideals coincide not with yours are being welded into the world plan, and much of their immediate work is organising the individual nations and welding them into an homogeneous whole, preparatory to their entrance into the great international thoughtform. All who work with far vision and all who hold before any seething and bewildered nation an ideal for the whole are under His wide inspiration. Internationalism is the aim of His endeavour. With Him works the great Angel or Deva of the spiritual plane, referred to in the Treatise on Cosmic Fire as the Lord Agni; He seeks to touch with the hidden spiritual fire the head centres of all intuitive statesmen."

In the same way, if our intuition is awakened, we can find so many examples that includes each of us without any exception following the triangles of synthesis on every ray (to be illustrated in future posts), giving us a clue and a solution to a dysfunctional confused chaotic world situation.

More on Synthesis

 Again we shall contemplate on a few more words on the wisdom of synthesis (navigating the "narrow razor-edged Path" between duality or the "noble middle path" of Buddha) from our beloved DK. However I wish to emphasize that Djwal Khul and Alice Bailey demonstrated practical (not just theoretically) synthesis. For instance Alice Bailey being born in the west was open enough to acknowledge and bring forth teachings from a far wiser eastern/oriental master Djwal Khul. She could both surrender herself (a difficult quality to develop for the western concrete mind with its overemphasis on freedom) and at the same time was careful enough to guard herself against foolish blind devotion (a vice of oriental masses). Another disciple who demonstrated practical synthesis was Blavatsky (synthesis of religions). She established Theosophical society headquarters in the west and soon shifted it to the east although she worked and died for the cause of theosophy in the west. One mo...

Third Initiation : Disciple and Mental Body

 We studied initiations until the second in our ealier posts. Today let us look at the third especially from the perspective of a disciple (rather than the ray as well as the external ceremonial aspect conferred during the wesak full moon which we will cover later). The third initiation marks the culmination of complete mastery of the mental (in the same way that the earlier two initiations resulted into the control of physical and astral planes). It is a distinct initiation, which marks a definite transition out of the form consciousness (lower personality of mental, emotional(astral) and physical planes), and the initiate can function at will on the plane of the intuition though soul (ego). Between the second and third initiation work is struggling with and mastering the energies of the mental world. What kind of work ? DK sums that for us (details found in TWM book) as -  "A. Work on the mental plane produces realisation of duality. The disciple seeks to blend and merge the...

Aphorisms as seed-thoughts

 Subsequent to our discussion on seed-thoughts, another great example of seed-thouht I think is an aphorism. The complete agni-yoga series of books by Roerichs are aphorisms of Ethical living (and give Ray 1 flavour of fiery will to the yoga of synthesis). Similarly the temple aphorisms of Francia A. La Due give a Ray 5 flavour of occult science to the works of H.P. Blavatsky and William Q. Judge. We quote those aphorims (as seed-thoughts) from temple teachings of Master H. (with his image):  "Days come and days go, but if thou watchest thou shalt see: THE LOAD thou hast laid on the heart of a friend will God transfer to thine own heart; heavy as it presses on the heart of thy friend, heavier will it press on thine own heart in the days to come. THE STONE thou hast cast from the path of the blind will smite the adder lying in wait for thee. THE WEIGHT thou hast clamped on the feet of another will drag thine own feet into Hadean desolation. THE SHELTER thou hast given the wayfa...
