Chintamani (Sanskrit: chintan + mani; English: chintan—abstract thinking, and mani—jewel)
The Chintamani and Urusvati of Nicholas and Helena Roerich are, in a sense, parallel to Savitri and Auroville of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. Just as the ray mantrams of Master Djwal Khul through Bailey—mantram (Sanskrit: manan + trana; English: contemplation of the soul leading to liberation)—are deeply stirring and liberating for a disciple with an awakened intuition and higher mind, so too are these Sanskrit terms, that are symbolic in legends central to the works of Roerich and Sri Aurobindo, profoundly meaningful.
A mystic painting titled Chintamani (Sanskrit: chintan + mani; English: chintan—abstract thinking, and mani—jewel) is found on the inner side of the entrance door of the Urusvati Himalayan Research Center. Urusvati may be interpreted as (Sanskrit: uru—wide, su—beautiful, ati—very great; further elaboration belongs in another essay). In his essays, Nicholas refers to it as: “Chintamani, the Steed (horse), bearing on its back the miraculous Stone, the Treasure of the World.”
Helena writes:
“This Treasure is a fragment of the main body, guarded in the Stronghold of Light... All the great unifiers and founders of nations have possessed it. The East, especially, is full of legends about this gift of Orion, and the peoples of Asia seek it everywhere... There are many different versions of them which are more or less correct. Thus, the white horse, Erdeni Mori, of Tibet and Mongolia, which carries Chintamani (the Treasure of the World), is also connected with this occurrence.” (18 November 1935, Letters to Europe)
As I pondered the Sanskrit word Chintamani (chintan + mani), it dawned on me that, in English, it may be understood as: chintan—higher mental-plane abstract thinking, and mani—jewel. The usual — “aha” moment — an insight into hidden connections was revealed. The “Jewel” on the higher mental plane may be the jewel within the central bud in the Lotus on that plane, associated with the indwelling Lord of the Flame, also called the Solar Angel, Manasaputra, Agnishwatta, or Kumara, who endows humanity with the seed of chintan (conscious abstract thinking). This seed then germinates to reveal the mani, the jewel of the soul as evolution proceeds.
Esoterically, the Solar Angels, as their name implies, are considered citizens of the solar system rather than of any one planet. It is said that their origins lay in the more highly developed Venus scheme, and they came to Earth 18 million years ago in response to an appeal from our Planetary Logos. During the 3rd root race, in ancient Lemuria, the Logos became concerned at our slow evolutionary progress; man was individualized, but remained “mindless.”. Interestingly this is in crude aligment with the exoteric Orion legend described by Helena Roerich.
The Solar Angel (Chintamani, symbolically understood) is also central to the teachings of Blavatsky, Master Djwal Khul through Bailey, and related esoteric treatises.
Indeed, as we live intensely the reality of the “Yoga of Synthesis”—Raja Yoga (scientific occultism; Rays 3 and 5), Jnana Yoga (wisdom and compassion; Ray 2), Bhakti Yoga (harmonizing devotional mysticism; Rays 4 and 6), and Karma Yoga (purposeful, organized action; Rays 1 and 7)—such insights into hidden connections may become a natural aspect of everyday earthly life. However, until that moment arrives, one must continue to follow the pressures of karmic, family, and social life, yet with the hope of a new yoga.
Few quotes on Solar angels -
During the 3rd root race, in ancient Lemuria, the Logos became concerned at our slow evolutionary progress; man was individualized, but remained “mindless.”
"The Endowers of man with his conscious, immortal ego, are the “ Solar Angels ”— whether so regarded metaphorically or literally. The mysteries of the Conscious ego or human Soul are great. The esoteric name of these “ Solar Angels ” is, literally, the “ Lords ” ( Nath ) of “ persevering ceaseless devotion ” ( pranidhâna ). Therefore they of the fifth principle ( Manas ) seem to be connected with, or to have originated the system of the Yogis who make of pranidhâna their fifth observance (see Yoga Shastra, II., 32.) It has already been explained why the trans-Himalayan Occultists regard them as evidently iden- tical with those who in India are termed Kumâras, Agnishwattas, and the Barhishads." - The Secret Doctrine Volume 2.
"He had no middle principle to serve him as a medium between the highest and the lowest, the spiritual man and the physical brain, for he lacked Manas. The Monads which incarnated in those empty SHELLS, remained as unconscious as when separated from their previous incomplete forms and vehicles. - The Secret Doctrine Volume 2.
"The Lords of the Flame implanted a germ of mind in the… group of animal-men who were ready for individualisation. This group, for a long time, was unable to express itself, and was most carefully nurtured by the Lords of Flame, nearly proving a failure. By the time, however, that the last subrace of the Lemurian root race was at its height it suddenly came into the forefront of the then civilisation, and justified hierarchical effort." - A Treatise on Cosmic Fire.
"...The Lords of the Flame were called in and they effected the transfer of polarisation from the lower atom of the Triad to the lowest atom of the Personality. Even then, the indwelling Flame could come no lower than the third subplane of the mental plane..." - Letters on Occult Meditation.
"As a many tinted Lotus of nine Petals. These petals are arranged in three circles around a central set of three closely folded petals, which shield what is called in the eastern books "The Jewel in the Lotus." This Lotus is a thing of rare beauty, pulsating with life and radiant with all the colours of the rainbow, and at the first three initiations the three circles are revealed in order, until at the fourth initiation the initiate stands before a still greater revelation, and learns the secret of that which lies within the central bud." - Initiations, Human and Solar.
"The great Solar Angel, Who embodies the real man and is his expression on the plane of higher mind, is literally his divine ancestor, the ‘Watcher’ Who, through long cycles of incarnation, has poured Himself out in sacrifice in order that man might BE." - Vicente Beltran Anglada.
