Today we take a step further in our comprehension of synthesis. Reconciling Assagioli's depiction of synthesis with our notion of synthesis underlying the esoteric literature and mathematics, we can somewhat establish it's distinctive and precise nature again with a triangle.
A. The difference between synthesis (vertex S) and a mere compromise (vertex C) is fundamental and clearly distinguished. One is realized on the same level; it can be called “the middle way” of compromise, the blending of the two poles. The other is achieved at a higher level: it is the fusion of the poles into a higher synthesis. In other words from the higher unifying perspective of vertex S, the opposite side AB (expressing duality through vertices A,B) is an illusion or relatively less true.
B. Synthesis, brought about by a higher element or principle which transforms, sublimates and reabsorbs the two poles into a higher reality. The two polarities are absorbed into a higher unity endowed with qualities which transcend those of either.
C. Illustrative Examples:
1. In P.T.Raju's comparative philosophy, Triangle A,C,B,S:
Indian (A) , Chinese (C), Western (B), Global/World Philosophy (S)
2. In Assagioli's Psychosynthesis, he furnishes many techniques leading to such Triangles A,C,B,S:
Rebellion (A) , Behavioral compromise (C), Submission (B), Elimination of Cause and Spiritual acceptance (S)
Self-Depreciation (inferiority Complex) (A) , Modesty (C), Arrogance (superiority Complex) (B), Spiritual Dignity (S)
Licence (A) , Temperance (C), Repression (B), Transmutation and sublimation (S)
Intellectual Doubt (A) , Common sense (C), Dogmatism (B), Spiritual understanding (S)
Excitement (A) , Calm (C), Depression (B), Serenity (S)
Blind Optimism (A) , Practical Realism (C), Fearful Pessimism (B), Clear Vision of Reality (S)
3. In modern mathematics and science, we find Triangle A,C,B,S:
Electrical/Magnetic + Polarity (A) , Neutral/Equlibrised (C), Electrical/Magnetic - Polarity (B), Electromagnetism (S)
Set (A) , Set-theory (C), Function (B), Category of Sets (S)
Objects (A) , Structural branches of Mathematics (C), Morphisms (B), Category of those structures (S)
Category (A) , Category-theory (C), Functor (B), Universal Category CAT (S)
4. In Esoteric Literature we study hypothesis alluding to such a synthesis, Triangle A,C,B,S:
In Advait Vedantism the experience of time is: Past (A) , Present (C), Future (B), Eternal Now (S)
In theosophy: Religion (A) , Philosophy (C), Science (B), Secret Doctrine (Cosmogensis and Anthropogenesis Hypotheses) (S)
In Seven rays books of esoteric philosophy: Psychoanalysis (A) , Integral Psychology (C), Psychosynthesis (B), Esoteric Psychology (Seven Rays Hypotheses) (S)
This is an overall picture we can deduce about synthesis so far, which will evolve as we continue to study the next step forward in the evolution of humanity.
Images illustrate some of these illuminating examples.
