In His (Morya's) Own Country (The Roerichs' Memorial House) ... I Nicholas Roerich's Studio Nicholas Roerich once remarked, “Where can one experience such joy as when the sun shines upon the Himalayas, when the blue is more intense than sapphires, when, in the far distance, the glaciers glitter like incomparable gems? All religions, all teachings, are synthesized in the Himalayas. The virgin of dawn—the Ushas of the ancient Vedas—possesses the same lofty virtues as the joyful Lakshmi.” Last summer, for Vaishakh (Wesak) 2025, I was on the other side of the Himalayan Dhauladhar ranges. This spring, I was on the Kullu side, where I was able to experience, with the same joy as the first flower in a spring meadow, the “Spring in Kullu” that Nicholas Roerich painted—amidst the materialism and tourism of India in 2026. The soul (the great AUM, which leads to the inexpressible Heights) of India is deeply fragrant, whereas its menacing vesture and the folds of its garments are caught in the throes of a conflicting harmony of the fourth Ray. With his worktable, a small studio, and a tiny house in the Himalayas—the Abode of Light—Nicholas Roerich found himself free in thought. From here, he spoke of a glorious future—amidst the monstrous mental accumulations of obsolete frippery—where signs of synthesis and the harmony of perfection were becoming visible. From peaks came the revelation to Roerich - "Himalayas! Here is the Abode of Rishis. Here is Shambhala. Here resounded the sacred Flute of Krishna. Here proclaimed the Blessed Gautama Buddha. Here originated all Vedas. Here lived Pandavas. Here— Gessar Khan. Here—Aryavarta. Himalayas, Jewel of India. Himalayas, Treasure of the World. Himalayas, the sacred symbol of ascent.” (“Himalaya” means, in Sanskrit, “Abode of Snow.”) Photos - Nicholas Roerich's Studio, Himalayas from his studio ...
